Throw1Deep boys and girls dominate weight throw and set new records

Wins both events, claim nine of the top twelve spots, and set the new national sophomore record

Pocatello, Idaho-At this year’s Simplot Games, Throw1Deep throwing club out of Marietta, Ga., had a great presence in the boys and girls weight throw. Nine of the fifteen athletes placed in the top six, and all but two athletes made it to finals.

The girls took the top five spots and seventh out of eight in the weight throw competition.

Leading the pack was junior Lauren Chambers with a monstrous throw of 58’10 ½”.

“ I feel really good, I had a personal best (beat her previous record) by 3 inches, so I feel good.”

Her teammate Patrice Gates placed second and broke the national sophomore record of 53’11”, with a throw of 54’0-1/8”.

“ It feels really good, I have been trying to break that record for awhile now, and it was an indoor personal best for me.”

Allison Horner, an outstanding hammer thrower for Throw1Deep and hopeful world junior team member, claimed third with a throw of 52’10”.

The Throw1Deep boys also dominated the weight throw competition. Wesley Wright destroyed the field with a tremendous throw of 77’3’’. This is Wright’s second straight Simplot win.

“It wasn’t my best throw, but it still feels good to win. Especially two years in a row.”

Freshman sensation Andrew Dunkleberger, also showcased his skills taking an impressive second place with a new personal record of 59’. Back in 2003, Dunkleberger’s older brother Jake took third place in the weight throw as senior.

Throw1Deep coach Mike Judge was very impressed with his team and their sweep of the weight throw competition.

“I’m very proud of the boys and girls. Not only with the athletes that placed, but with the team as a whole.”
