Stellar Stewart sisters seek gold

POCATELLO, Idaho – If you ask anyone in Utah about high school girls’ track and field, you are bound to hear about twin sisters Natalie and Nachelle Stewart from Spanish Fork, Utah. The seniors have dominated high school track and field in the state for the past two years.

Last year at the Utah State high school track meet, the sisters each competed in four events and won gold in three of them, only placing second to each other. They also led the Spanish Fork girls’ team to the 5A Utah state championship. After their 2007 season, Nachelle was recognized by Gatorade and Rise magazine as the Utah track and field athlete of the year.

Much of their success is to due to their hard work, dedication, and constantly having a competitive work out partner. Some people may not think it would be ideal to have a sibling on the same team, but the sisters love it.

“It’s fun to have my sister,” says Natalie. “We have friendly competition and we really push each other. I always think if she can do it, I can do it.”

Natalie and Nachelle have also had a strong presence at the Simplot Games. In 2006, as sophomores, Nachelle placed second in the 200 meters, Natalie placed fifth in the 400 meters, and their sprint medley team placed fourth. In 2007, Natalie placed third in the 400 meters and Nachelle led the sprint medley team to second place. In 2008, ach of the girls would like to improve their past times and claim gold at the competitive meet.

“There are so many great competitors, and I feel I do better competing against the best,” Natalie says.

Nachelle adds: “It is the first meet of the season; it is both exciting and nerve racking plus it is on a national level. It really pumps me up for the rest of the season.”

The outstanding sisters are also champions in the class room and in the community. Each of the girls volunteers with a youth track program and at an elderly home in their community. Both have also maintained outstanding grades.
