Simplot record holder returns to Games

POCATELLO, Idaho They say that records are made to be broken, but some may wonder how true that is with one Simplot Games’ record. High jumper Lisa Ramos, formerly known as Lisa Bernhagen, returns to Pocatello for the 2008 Simplot Games to watch athletes chase after the record she set over two decades ago.

Ramos holds the Games’ first record, 6’3” in the girls’ high jump, a record she set in 1984. She will return as a special guest at the Games’ 30th anniversary.

“I am honored to be invited back and excited to see what the Games have become,” said Ramos. “This is a meet that makes every athlete feel special.”

Back in 1984, in the sixth year of the Simplot Games, Ramos, a senior from Hailey, Idaho, not only set the Simplot Games record at 6’3”, but a national record as well. Ramos went on to finish her career at Wood River High School as a four-time Idaho state champion in the high jump and 200 meters, as well as earning 400-meter and 400-meter relay titles.

With such outstanding high school marks, it was no surprise that Ramos was highly sought after at the NCAA Division I level. After being heavily recruited, the Idaho native decided on Stanford University, the best match for her academically and athletically. There Ramos competed in two Olympic Trials as well as making the Junior National team. In 1987 she set the NCAA indoor record at 6’5-1/2” and weeks later she was able to capture the NCAA national title with a height of 6’3”.

At Stanford, Ramos attained her bachelor’s degree in Organizational Behavior as well as her master’s degree in Sociology.
