Nico Weiler is still the best in the world
Weiler wins and entertains at the Simplot Games

Pocatello, Idaho- There was a lot of hype surrounding the boys’ pole vault at this year’s Simplot Games. The two best high school pole vaulters in the world competed against each other, Nico Weiler a senior from San Jose, Calif., and Corey Shank a junior from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and they didn’t disappoint.

Both looked impressive as they cleared 16’3’’ with ease, but in the end, Weiler had the last say. Weiler entertained the crowd as he attempted to clear 17’7”, which would have been a new national record. However, Weiler ended up just short but still ended his day with a 17’2” vault and the title of Simplot pole vault champion.

More than 2,000 athletes came from across the U.S. and Canada to participate in the 30th annual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company since 1979, the 2008 Simplot Games were held February 14-16; at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena is Pocatello, Idaho.
