Shade Weygandt sets bar at Simplot Games

Breaks meet record in pole vault

Pocatello, Idaho- The Holt Arena crowd clapped along as Shade Weygandt attempted to break the Simplot Games meet record. Weygandt had already been crowned the champion of the pole vault with her vault of 12’ 3”. Her record setting attempt of 13’1” was merely an exclamation point. Weygandt excelled during the competition, solidifying her spot as the #1 girls’ pole vaulter in the country. Weygandt was the only athlete to clear 12’3” leaving her the champion.

Weygandt, from Mansfield, Texas, was satisfied with her win saying, “It feels good to win, but I didn’t jump my best”. She hopes to hit 14” when she competes again in March.

More than 2,000 athletes come from across the U.S. and Canada to participate in the 30th annual Simplot Games. Simplot Games remains the nation’s premier high school indoor track and field event. Sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company since 1979, the 2008 Simplot Games were held February 14-16; at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena is Pocatello, Idaho.
